Genesis of Project Swabhimaan

Project Swabhimaan, an initiative by ‘Sun Shine – A Ray of Hope’ (SSROH) was conceived with an aim to add grandeur to ones persona, confidence, respect......and make them stand with head held high in the society. The collective effort to prevent social evils shall certainly end it. Hence, SSROH has taken a step to end various forms of violence against women, sexual abuse and assault at schools, colleges, work place and home, etc.

Aim of Project Swabhimaan

The program aims to achieve our Goal 3 (promote gender equality and empower women), Goal 5 (combat communicable diseases and health related issues) and Goal 7 (global partner in development of the society) of SSROH.


Seriousness of the Issue

Report released by Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India in April 2007 confirms that almost 53% children face one or more forms of sexual abuse with 22% having suffered severe sexual abuse and 6% were also sexually assaulted. Children in the age group of 5 to 12 years suffer from higher level of abuse, however largely unreported. Of all, 73% of the sexually abused victims are in the age group of 11 to 18 years, 71% of offenders were known and trusted by the victim.


Format of Project

Project Swabhimaan is conducted in five different ways to address various aspects in a very scientific and systematic fashion.

1.   Conduct brain storming workshop for the faculty and management.

2.   Conduct survey to ascertain sexual abuse and assault on campus, if any.

3.   Conduct seminar for students on sexual abuse and assault on campus.

4.   Formulate policy for schools and colleges to contain sexual abuse and assault on campus to instill sense of safety, security and self esteem.

5.   Counseling of victimised girls to come out of trauma and lead a normal and dignified life.

6.   Sensitize the population especially girls and women against violence on women.

Scope of Workshop and Seminar

The seminar sensitized against the seriousness of the issue with reports on the subject from various organizations in India and globally. For better assimilation situations were enacted to paint and modus operandi of offender given out to safeguard from falling prey. The girls were educated upon signs and symptoms of abuse and assault in school aged children, teenagers and adults to take care of their kith and kin’s. Ten safety rules were given out to fight back the evil as bystander and also safeguard own self. As far as violence against women is concerned, they are educated upon various laws existing to safeguard them.

The seminar emphasized on the ways to help the abused and assaulted person to get over the trauma and get back to main stream with self respect and self esteem. Together, we will stop all forms of crime against women by prevention at all levels and on all days. The effort of SSROH shall continue to sensitize more and more youths across the country.

PROGRAMS UNDER PROJECT SWABHIMAAN

SWABHIMAAN - 1 : Seminar on Sexual Abuse and Assault on Campus at Kanhe Phata, 12 June 2011

The first seminar of Project Swabhimaan to sensitive youths on sexual abuse and assault on campus was conducted in the lap of the nature on 12 June 2011 at Kanhe Phata, approx 45 kms North-west of Pune on Pune-Mumbai highway. The aim of seminar was to raise awareness about campus sexual abuse and assault to end it. SSROH sensitized 575 girls in the age group of 13 to 25 years belonging to different strata of the society hailing from schools, colleges and universities from urban and rural parts of districts Pune and Solapur. These girls hailed from different socio economic fabric of the society from conservative to modern thoughts and belonged to various parts of the country.

SWABHIMAAN - 2 : Seminar on Sexual Abuse and Assault on Campus at Saswad, 05 August 2011

The second seminar on this sensitive issue was conducted at Vaghire Mahavidyalaya, Saswad, approx 41 kms South-east of Pune on Pune-Baramati highway, wherein 191 girls in the age group of 18 to 22 years attended, graduation, post graduation and professional courses hailing who hail from different socio economic fabric of the society from conservative thoughts. These girls were students of graduation, post graduation and professional courses from Purandhar taluk of Pune.

SWABHIMAAN - 3 : Workshop for Faculty and Authorities of College of Nursing on Sexual Abuse and Assault on Campus

at AFMC, Pune, 10 Sep 2011

A workshop was conducted at College of Nursing, Armed Forces Medical College, Pune on 20 Sep 2011 to carry out thread bare analysis to find solution to end sexual abuse and assault on the students of nursing at campus. The workshop was attended by twelve faculty and management members of the elite institute of Army Medical Corps. The institute is responsible to train Nursing Officers to serve in any part of the country, to give utmost care to the casualty soldiers in the toughest and remotest part of the country, keeping own honour, safety and respect intact. The eminent personalities present shared enormous and very personal experiences so as to benefit their students without undergoing the same.


SWABHIMAAN - 4 : Seminar on Sexual Abuse and Assault on Campus at BMCC, Pune, 20 Sep 2011

The seminar was conducted at the auditorium of Brihan Maharasthra College of Commerce, located in the heart of Pune city, with an aim to raise awareness about campus sexual abuse and assault to end it. The seminar conducted on 20 Sep 2011, attended by 475 girls in the age group of 14 to 22 years belonged to various schools and colleges in and around Pune.

SWABHIMAAN - 5 : Survey and Seminar for Nursing Students on Sexual Abuse and Assault at AFMC,

Pune, 20 Sep 2011

A survey and seminar was conducted for the graduate and post graduate students of College of Nursing, Armed Forces Medical College, Pune on 20 Oct 2011 to carry out thread bare analysis to find solution to end sexual abuse and assault on the students of nursing at campus. The survey was conducted on 150 nursing students of graduation and post graduation . Thereafter, seminar was conducted for the same students, which was tailor made based on workshop with faculty / management and analysis based on survey.  The students present also shared their personal experiences and the way they handled it. The content certainly them feel more confident and bold to handle such situations in future without falling prey to offenders, keeping own honour, safety and respect intact.


SWABHIMAAN - 6 : Seminar on Sexual Abuse and Assault on Campus for NCC Girl Cadets at Pune, 20 Dec 2011

Girl cadets of NCC travel widely across the country and few travel abroad to neighbouring countries. A total of 50 girl cadets were sensitized to safeguard them from any form of sexual abuse and assault through seminar was conducted on 20 Dec 2011 at Pune. These girls in the age group of 14 to 22 years belonged to various schools and colleges in and around Pune. A survey was also conducted on them to ascertain the forms of sexual abuse and assault on them, if any in past. The situations were enacted. The enthusiasm was felt the way cadets came forward to share experiences on the issue to help end the evil.


SWABHIMAAN - 7 : Seminar on Sexual Abuse and Assault at Renuka Swaroop Memorial Girls High School and

Junior College, Pune, 11 Jan 2012

The seminar was conducted at the Renuka Swaroop Mandir High School and Junior College located in the heart of Pune city, with an aim to raise awareness about campus sexual abuse and assault to end it. The seminar conducted on 11 Jan 2012, attended by 500 girls in the age group of 14 to 18 years belonged to various segment of the society. The girls were very enthusiastic and shared their experiences with other girls present during the seminar.


SWABHIMAAN - 8 : Survey and Seminar on Sexual Abuse and Assault on Campus for Girls of Pune, Solapur and

Baramati, 16 Jan 2012

The seminar was conducted for 510 girls from various schools and colleges from Pune, Solapur and Baramati in the age group of 13 to 23 years, to raise awareness against sexual abuse and assault on girls to end it. These girls belonged to various segment of the society. A suitable platform was given to girls to share experiences on the subject, wherein they shared with boldness. A survey was also conducted to analyse the sexual abuse and assault on girls from various segment of the society. The girls who came forward were adequately counseled to their satisfaction.

Junior College, Pune, 18 Jan 2012

A survey and seminar was conducted on 18 Jan 2012 for 150 girls in the age group of 13 to 18 years at Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya Girls High School and Junior College located in the heart of Pune city, with an aim to end sexual abuse and assault. The girls also came forward and shared their experiences for the benefit of other girls present.


SWABHIMAAN - 10 : Seminar on Sexual Abuse and Assault at Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce,

Pune 22 Jan 2012

The seminar was conducted at the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce, Pune with an aim to raise awareness against sexual abuse and assault to end it. The seminar conducted on 22 Jan 2012, attended by 550 girls in the age group of 18 to 25 years belonged to various part of the country. A suitable platform was provided for girls to share their experiences. The first experience was shared by the Vice Principal herself, which was followed by sharing of experience by a large number of girls. Survey was also conducted on the girls to ascertain and analyse the sexual abuse and assault on them.
