PROJECT JAGRITI – THE AWAKENING


Conception of Project Jagriti

Project Jagriti was conceived on 07 April 2011, two days after the birth of Sun Shine – A Ray of Hope (SSROH) to bring in awakening for social, economic, political and ideological changes in the society through various programs like rallies, debates, painting competitions, etc with a bigger participation for bigger impact aiming both direct and indirect beneficiaries.


Aim of Project Jagriti

Project Jagriti aims to achieve our Goal 1 (eradicate poverty and hunger), Goal 2 (Provision of universal education), Goal 3 (promote gender equality and empower women), Goal 4 (reduce child mortality rate and improve maternal health), Goal 5 (combat communicable diseases and health related issues), Goal 6 (work for environment sustainability) and Goal 7 (global partner in development of the society).

Since the conception of Project Jagriti, the following seven programs have been undertaken nation-wide to benefit 2443 persons directly and 26900 persons indirectly :-

PROGRAMS UNDER PROJECT JAGRITI

JAGRITI - 1 : Awareness to Combat Drug Resistance on World Health Day - 07 April 2011

‘Sun Shine – A Ray of Hope’ (SSROH), born on 05 April 2011, undertook its maiden assignment under Project Jagriti within two days of its birth. The awareness rally was launched with 128 youths from various colleges and universities on 07 April 2011, on the occasion of World Health Day to sensitize masses to combat antimicrobial resistance. “Combat Drug Resistance - No Action Today, No Cure Tomorrow”, slogan released by WHO of World Health Day 2011 was rallied between Shivajinagar (Agriculture University) and

FC Road (Fergusson College) in Pune. The highly motivated youths were on the roads for more than three hours to send the message home in the most crowded and highly populated college goers - the Gen next.


JAGRITI - 2 : Campaign Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking : 25-26 June 2011

SSROH under its second program of Project Jagriti joins hand globally on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to sensitize the 375 youths against the evil to have a society free of drug abuse on 25-26 Jun 2011 at Pune. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released World Drug Report 2011 confirms, usage of illicit drugs by 210 million people every year, of that almost 2,00,000 die as a consequence, hence the need to address the issue.

 

Pune was identified for our two days sensitization programme, being the second largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai known for its educational institutions and fusion of old and young. The city faces a major challenge from drug abuse due to city full of youths from across the country. The initiative was launched to campaign for Global Action for Healthy Communities without Drugs through cross-country run, drawing and painting competition, debates and awareness rally on the day at Balewadi Stadium, Pune. Students from various schools, colleges and universities from in and around Pune participated with an aim to mobilize support and inspire people to act against drug abuse by community based intervention.

 

JAGRITI - 3 : Two Days Special Programme for Rural and Unorganised Sector on 02 – 03 July 2011

The third program of Project Jagriti was conducted for rural and unorganised sector workers at village Sundarnagar approx 21 kms south of Pune on Pune-Satara road on 02 - 03 July 2011.The two days special seminar was conducted on behalf of Central Board for Workers Education, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India. The project educated 40 rural women in the age group of 19 to 45 years old, who are running small stalls and shops to earn livelihood for their family. The eminent speakers enlightened the gathering on social evils, blind belief, functioning of Self Help Group, women empowerment.

The women present could very easily associate themselves with the topics. They enthusiastically participated and felt deeply satisfied after having heard the speakers. They expressed their gratitude to speakers who hilariously covered the sensitive topics in depth without having hurt the feelings of any one. Women present wished that every woman irrespective of caste, creed, religion should also get the privilege to get educated on these topics. Having heard about social evils and blind belief, they candidly expressed their ignorance and fool hardy in following such baseless rituals to which they fell prey. They pledged to change their lives by no more following it by themselves or in the surrounding.

They well understood the role of women in present society and in the multi-dimension progression of their families. The speaker educated and motivated women to make their own Self Help Groups for development as a society. The functioning of SHG was elaborated. The necessity for women empowerment and role of women was well elaborated. These women were earning their livelihood through stalls and small shops, alongside managing their household.

JAGRITI - 4 : Two Days Special Programme for SC/ST of Rural and Unorganised Sector on 11 – 12 Nov 2011

The fourth program of Project Jagriti was conducted for SC/ST women from rural and unorganised sector of Village Sarai Taki, Jhunsi, Allahabad approx 11 kms east of Allahabad on Allahabad-Varanasi road on 11 - 12 Nov 2011. The two days special seminar was conducted on behalf of Central Board for Workers Education, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India.

The project educated 40 SC/ST women in the age group of 19 to 40 years old, who are running their household. The eminent speakers enlightened the gathering on government schemes for upliftment of SC/ST/OBC, social evils, blind belief, awareness against HIV/AIDS and functioning of Self Help Group. They enthusiastically participated and felt deeply satisfied after having heard the speakers.

JAGRITI 5 - Seminar to Sensitize Youths to Eliminate Violence Against Women on International Day (25 Nov 2011)

On the occasion of International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women on 25 Nov 2011, SSROH conducted a seminar under Project Jagriti to sensitize the 1200 youths of Pune and areas around in the age group of 13 to 18 years, on the increasing violence against women, need to eliminate and make them aware of government initiatives including various laws of the land to safeguard women against violence and action to be taken by the victim. The youths belonged to low and middle class families where the crime recorded is the most. The seminar scheduled for 25 Nov 2011 was conducted 28 Nov 2011, due to Pune Bandh called by NCP on 25 Nov 2011. The children were deeply touched by the content per se and vowed to eliminate the violence against women. The seminar shall also indirectly benefit 12000 men and women through these 1200 youths who attended the seminar.

JAGRITI 6 - Events on World AIDS Day at Hadapsar, Pune 01 Dec 2011

On the occasion of World AIDS Day 01 Dec 2011, SSROH took the initiative to sensitize the 500 girls at Hadapsar, Pune in Maharashtra. SSROH organized various events for alert and educate on the issue of HIV/AIDS to include – seminar, painting competition, slogan writing competition, elocution competition, essay writing competition in Marathi, essay writing competition in English and drama competition at Chandrabhaga Baburao Tupe Sadhana Kanya Vidyalaya and Akutai Kalyani Girls Junior College, Hadapsar, Pune. The girls in the age group of 13 to 18 years attending the program hailed from lower and middle income group. They participated with lot of enthusiasm. The participants were encouraged by giving away prizes to the winners of various events.

JAGRITI 7 - Events on World AIDS Day at Saswad, Taluk Purandhar, 01 Dec 2011

In another event on the occasion of World AIDS Day 01 Dec 2011, SSROH sensitized 160 girls at Saswad in Taluk Purandhar, Maharashtra. SSROH organized a talk by an eminent doctor on the subject, play enacted by youths to send across the message of HIV/AIDS at Vaghire Mahavidyalaya, Saswad. The girls in the age group of 18 to 14 years attended the program. The Principal alongwith attendees were all praises for the content of talk by the Doctor and the way play sent the strong message in a very simple way.
